REVO
C13721S low-pressure sodium lantern. Similar to the C13723, the
slightly smaller REVO C13721 was available as a top-entry or side-entry lantern,
with or without integral control-gear, and was designed
for use on minor roads and side street installations. The lantern
never quite enjoyed the popularity of its bigger brother the
C13723, but did see some widespread use in certain parts
of the UK; odd examples can still be found in places
such as Haselmere in Surrey and in the Swansea and Neath
areas of South Wales.
The C13721S is pictured
in acquired condition.
The
example in the collection came from the Penn district
of Wolverhampton and was the last of its type in the
City.
This lozenge-shaped lantern
is very bulky in comparison to its modern counterparts,
and being an integral control-gear fitted variant it's
very heavy too. Like any survivors of the type, this
lantern ended up using 35w SOX lamps.
Access
to the interior of the lantern is made by releasing
two toggle-action clips at the side of the lantern,
allowing the plastic bowl to hinge down on its side-mounted
hinges. Once the bowl is hinged open, the 'stepped'
white-enamelled
steel reflector plate on to which the lampholder is mounted
on one side,
and the control-gear on the back of it, can be removed
by releasing four 'captive' screws
in the plate. Once this is removed, access can be gained
to the control-gear and the bracket mounting clamp.
With
the bowl partially open the 'stepped' reflector plate
can
be clearly seen; the control-gear is mounted on top of the
reflector. Sadly,
the bowl is in poor condition, but a suitable replacement
has been sourced and
will be used in the eventual restoration of the lantern.

when still in service in
Wolverhampton in 2004.
The
C13721 was originally replaced with a Philips MI36 55w
SOX lantern, but was itself replaced in 2005 with this
Industria 2600 70w SON lantern on a column extension.
