Industria 2500/Lamda 55w
fluorescent lantern. Made by the Dutch concern Industria, the 2500 is
a modern day fluorescent lantern designed for use with compact fluorescent lamps, and is beginning
to see widespread use in certain parts of the UK. In the Midlands region, Staffordshire is the place to see these lanterns in numbers and
where they
have been used in the County Council's PFI scheme to replace obsolete and
less efficient lighting.
The lantern, which is 700mm long and 210mm
wide is constructed from impact-resistant glass reinforced
plastic, and is fitted with an impact-resistant, UV-stabilised polycarbonate
bowl. The 2500 Lamba can be ordered for operation with
18w TLD lamps, or 24w, 36w, 55, and 80w PL lamps, and
is fitted with an electronic ballast as standard. The fitting can
be side-entry mounted, or mounted post-top with a specially
ordered adaptor, and can be used on main roads at higher
mounting heights with 80w compact fluorescent lamps.
The example in the collection
is a 55w variant and was intended for
use in Staffordshire, but had been returned to the depot with faulty electronic
ballast, which had already been removed. The lantern was acquired in October 2006, where upon a suitable replacement
ballast was sourced along with a new Philips PL-L 840/4P
55w lamp. The replacement ballast has yet to be fitted and wired
in.

With the bowl open the polished
reflector and 2G11 4-pin lamp holder are revealed. The length of
the reflector is determined by the length of the lamp
used, that is, the 36w version would have a shorter reflector
than this example for 55w lamps.

came without its original ballast; the replacement ballast
has merely been placed where it would normally be fitted.

55w CFL lamps. This is a non-dimmable,
constant output ballast.
The label on the galvanised
gear tray states that the lantern is for use with 230v
50 Hz 55w PL lamps, and has an excellent ingress protection
rating of IP65.

lantern seen in the village of Bilbrook, Staffordshire
in 2006 where they have been used to replace obsolete
mercury lighting. Note this lantern has the shorter
reflector above the lamp for the smaller 36w PL-L lamp,
but like the 55w version these lamps give off a very
pleasing light at night.
