The Thorn 'Celest' is a pleasing compact fluorescent lantern manufactured by Thorn Lighting. The Celest was released by Thorn in 2007, and is designed to run Thorn TC-L lamps, and although the body is physically the same size, the three basic models are geared for 36w, 55w, or 80w lamps. In addition to this, there are three off-shoot models, which are adapted to work with Thorn's 'Telea' lighting radio-controlled management system. Telea features integrated Radio Frequency (RF) controllers (LSRF, Switch RF controller or LDRF Stepless Dim RF controllers) to transmit data and monitor electronic control gear; dependant on the system package selected.

A column-top mounted 55w PL-L Thorn Celest in Grosmont, North Yorkshire.

The first time I saw one of these lanterns was in Grosmont, North Yorkshire where the famous North Yorkshire Moors Railway operates through. I instantly liked the design and though that it looked like a slimmed-down version of a Philips MA90. I'm not ususally simttent with modern lanterns, but this was an exception, and naturally it wasn't long after that I sort to acquire an example. This Celest comes from a good contact 'up North', and is a well received addition to the collect.

These are the current models:

  • HFF    CELEST 36W TC-L   HFF FSD 2G11
  • HFF    CELEST 55W TC-L   HFF FSD 2G11
  • HFF    CELEST 80W TC-L   HFF FSD 2G11
  • Telea  CELEST 36W/LDRF TC-L HFX FSD 2G11
  • Telea  CELEST 55W/LDRF TC-L HFX FSD 2G11
  • Telea  CELEST 80W/LDRF TC-L HFX FSD 2G11

From the side, the Celest is a slick looking luminaire

The main body is powder-coated, die-cast aluminium. Note the nicely recessed bowl retaining

spring clips that cleanly fold away. No rubbishy, easy-to-break plastic fasteners.

Upon releasing the two flush-fitting spring clips, the neoprene sealed bowl can be lifted, and

access gained to the lantern's interior.

The galvanised gear tray plate is of a 'tool-free' design. To remove it, all that needs to be done

is to push  this spring clip free of it's locator, which in turn will allow the gear tray to be removed

from the lantern. It doesn't get much easier.

With the gear tray free, there's no danger of it falling from the lantern body, as it's

secured by two plastic safety cable restraints

The ballast is a Phillips High Frequency 'Performer Mk2' warm-start PL-L unit.

The Integral 'rotating' die-cast aluminium spigot, for column top, or bracket mounting.

The obligatory product label clearly states the model, wattage, IP rating, and notes that the

product meets all current EC requirements.

Within the reflector are two push-out sections in which the lamp support can be mounted, this

is a standard component, which can be adapted to allow  for the fitment of different length PL-L lamps.
