Lantern in the Collection:

The example in the collection is a 57w PLT lamped variant and had been used for evaluation purposes on an installation in South Yorkshire. The reason for its early demise is not known, but the lantern may have been removed due to a fault; however, it has yet to be tested, so this cannot be confirmed at the time of writing.

The Thorn Jet-1 is a tiny lantern and is not much bigger than a Thorn Beta-5 35w SOX lantern The mobile phone gives us an idea of the lantern's size.

The finned area at the back of the lantern is to help disperse heat from the ballast trapped inside the canopy. This example is fitted with a NEMA socket, which has clearly seen use. The yellow sticker should be removed before fitting a photocell, but many lighting engineers don't bother unpeeling it, but merely puncture it with the prongs of the photocell during fitment.

Underside of the Thorn Jet-1, showing the one piece plastic bowl with frosted rear section that is intended to hide the control gear from view. The clear plastic section of the bowl has unfortunately become marked through the lantern being mishandled by engineers; hopefully, this will polish out.

Left: Looking more like a shuttle ship from a science fiction film than a street light, this rear view of the Jet shows to good effect the cooling fins, and the large spigot receptor that is also designed to be fitted with a special adaptor to allow post top mounting and tilting of the lantern. Right: The front underside view of the Jet - the view seen from street level.

The Jet-1 appears to be almost spherical in this front-on view.

With the lantern upturned and the quick-release bowl removed, we can see that the lamp compartment and gear compartment are integral within the same IP65 housing.

The lantern's control gear consists of a Philips HF-P12642PL-T/C HF-Performer electronic ballast.
