Revo C15152
'Sol-D'or' lantern.
A smaller but
virtually identical lantern to the larger C151154 Sol-D'or lantern, this
version being designed for use with 45/60w SO/H and SOI lamps. The
Sol-D'or' was a revolutionary lightweight streetlight designed by REVO that
combined an aluminium rear housing and all-in-one plastic bowl and canopy,
which when removed revealed the lantern's entire interior.
Never
a very popular lantern with lighting departments, very few 'Sol-D'or's
survive today; especially as the plastic bowl/canopy assembly becomes brittle
with age and is easily broken. However, these smaller Sol-D'or's are a
little more robust than the larger C151154 variant, and is probably the
reason why more of them survive. Happily, the lantern in the collection was
saved complete some years ago from Wolverhampton where the type saw some limited
popularity in the Bilston area of the City.
A rare
view of a 'trio' of 45w/60w Sol-D'or's! I did originally
have three of these lanterns, but passed the other two
on to fellow collectors. All came from Wolverhampton
some years ago.
This
view of the back of the lantern clearly shows the levers
for the spring-loaded fasteners that once turned and
released the bowl/canopy assembly. The truncated face
of the spigot mounting area suggests that the Sol-D'or'
was designed for mounting to out-reaches on concrete
columns.
This
C15154 'Sol-D'or' was still in service in Wolverhampton when
this picture was taken in 2005. Unfortunately, this
example has had the top of its housing drilled and fitted
with a mini-photocell.
These
is also a REVO C15154 'Sol-D'or' for 85/140-watt SO lamps
held in the collection.
